This month’s Vibe Pro Spotlight is on Hannah Moss, owner of My Wax Room located in Suite 23 within Vibe Salon Suites in Plymouth, MI. Hannah provides a wide range of body waxing services but specializes in brazilians and brows.

Why did you decide to go solo and work out of a salon suite as opposed to working in a traditional salon or spa setting?

I chose to go solo and open my own business, because I wanted to give my guests the best waxing experience possible. My priorities have always been giving smooth results, and hygiene/cleanliness. With the freedom of owning my own suite, I can customize which waxes, technique and products will best suit the guests skin needs. Operating on a smaller scale also helps minimize potential exposure to germs. I have complete control over sanitizing between appointments, and ensuring everything is up to state board standards.

Did you tour other salon suites? If so, why did you choose Vibe?

I did look at several other salon suites before choosing Vibe. Originally was located out of my home in Garden City, but I wanted something more professional. Vibe Salon Suites gave me just what I was looking for. The building is beautiful, and the atmosphere is fresh and fun. I’m so happy with this location, proximity to Downtown Plymouth and the freeway are ideal.

What advice would you give to someone who is trying to decide if they want to go solo or not?

If your thinking going out on your own .. Do it! The rewards you get from taking responsibility of yourself and your career are just limitless. If you have a strong passion in your craft, and can micromanage your personal and business life. Then going solo with Vibe will definitely be worth it. Your investing in yourself!

What is the best thing about being an independent beauty professional?

The reward of feeling accomplished. Being able to service happy guests that love coming in for their waxes. Knowing the genuine care and service I give them comes completely from my heart.

What do you like most about your suite at Vibe Salon Suites?

What I like most about my Suite here at Vibe, would be the amount of storage within my room. I also really like not being fully responsible for the parking lot or bathrooms, they take care of that for you!

 

How to Raise your Prices when Moving to a Salon Suite

If you’re making the transition to a salon suite from working in a traditional salon or spa setting, you may be wondering if you should raise your prices and how. Some beauty professionals may be nervous to raise their prices because they don’t want to upset their clients or cause them to go to another stylist. This is understandable, but as an independent beauty professional it is so important to charge what you’re worth.

You will be providing your clients with an upgraded experience in your salon suite. They will have the opportunity to enjoy your one on one attention, a private setting, and an experience customized just for them! Not only that, but if you are thinking about raising your prices, you’ve probably invested time in classes and learning new skills.

Lastly, you are now running your own business so your time is more valuable than ever! Here are some tips on if you should raise your prices, how to raise your prices, and also how to break the news to your clients:

Signs that you are ready to Raise your Prices:

  • Your income does not go as far as it used to because the cost of everything is rising.

  • Clients are consistently offering you large tips.

  • You’re feeling resentful from spending so much time and energy with clients who aren’t paying enough in return

  • You’ve taken multiple classes and spent time learning new skills and techniques

  • You’ve been in the industry over 5 years and have perfected your skills (experience = more compensation)

  • You’re located in a more expensive neighborhood with clients who care more about quality than cost

How to Raise your Prices:

  • Start with a 10% adjustment across the board on all services and then adjust from there

  • Start by charging only new clients the new pricing to see if its well received (did they seem surprised by the price or did they had over their credit card without hesitation?)

  • Time it well. Increasing your prices during a busier time of the year when it’s more difficult for clients to book an appointment elsewhere.

Announce your Price Increase:

  • Inform your existing clients a couple months before the price increase goes into effect

  • Consider writing a letter that can be sent out through email or social media explaining the reason behind the price increase (ex: services more in demand, in line with price increases on products you need to perform your services, additional education and training, etc.)

  • Update the pricing on your website or booking app

Lastly, do not ever apologize for raising your prices. Own it! You have put the work in to make it to this point and you deserve to earn what you are worth.

This month’s Vibe Pro Spotlight is on Lindsey, owner of Studio L located in Vibe Salon Suites in Plymouth, MI. Lindsey is a licensed cosmetologist and has been in the hair industry for over 10 years. When she is not giving her clients the hair of their dreams, she is a busy mom of 2 boys, married to her high school sweetheart!

Why did you decide to go solo and work out of a salon suite as opposed to working in a traditional salon or spa setting?

I decided to move to a solo salon suite to provide a more intimate and private space for my clients to relax.

Did you tour other salon suites? If so, why did you choose Vibe?

I chose Vibe because the moment I met Vibe management, I knew they would do anything in their power to help provide the space I was looking for. It was so clean and spacious. I love the quiet and intimate atmosphere while doing my clients hair.

What advice would you give to someone who is trying to decide if they want to go solo or not?

I would say “go for it”! Having your own salon suite will give you the creative freedom that most hairstylists strive to have. You can attract your own ideal clients and truly be your authentic self with no one else there to judge what you’re doing.

What is the best thing about being an independent beauty professional?

I love being able to control my own schedule and create my own hours.

What do you like most about your suite at Vibe Salon Suites?

I love that there is free Wi-Fi and free laundry. I love that there are cleaners that come at night to make sure we’re maintaining that salon cleanliness standard.

New Year, New Business. Are you Ready to Own your Salon?

Can you believe the New Year is only a couple weeks away?! A new year is the perfect time for a fresh start. Are you ready to start your own salon business in 2021? If you’ve been dreaming of owning your salon and being your own boss, now is the time to start planning! Here are a few helpful tips to help you make this big decision and help you along the way:

1. Are you ready to take the plunge?

Opening your own salon suite takes courage. As we all know, with freedom comes responsibility. But don’t let that turn you away from opening a salon studio – it can empower a beauty professional to be in charge of their dream career! Having a large enough clientele is a must. Are you booked out at least a few weeks in advance, do you have a large base of clients who keep coming back to see you? If so, you may be ready to open your salon suite!

2. Find an Ideal Location

Location is key in starting a successful business. It is essential to find salon suites for rent that check off three boxes:

1. Within a 10 mile radius of your current salon
2. Close to your clientele
3. Close to where you live

Next, find a good balance between rent and location – sometimes it pays off to go with a better location with a little higher rent. 3. Take Care of Legal Responsibilities

Although this isn’t the most fun part about starting up your new salon suite, it is crucial to understand the licensing you need. We are happy to offer assistance and guidance with obtaining licensing. Here are a couple things you will definitely need:

Business License

A business license is necessary when renting and opening a salon suite. To get started, call up your local government (you can start by calling city hall) and find out which department grants business licenses. From there, do some basic paperwork and voila! You have a business license! Additionally, you will likely need to apply for an establishment license with your cosmetology state board, which you are often able to do online.

Professional Liability Insurance

This is one of the last of the boring – but very necessary – paperwork that you’ll need to do when opening a salon suite. 4. Booking & Credit Card Processing Solution

Work smarter and not harder – use technology as your assistant to make it easy to keep up with everything from booking appointments to marketing.

Instead of having clients contact you directly to set up appointments, consider using an online scheduling software – such as Gloss Genius, Vagaro, Salon Iris, Square and many more. Most services that offer online booking have other benefits, such as product inventory assistance, client tracking, credit card processing, appointment reminders, and marketing assistance. There are endless options in software assistance, so do your research to decide which one would work best for you and your new salon suite.

5. Finance Tracking and Taxes

To keep track of your finances and be ready for tax time, consider using accounting software. There are several free options you can use on your computer or phone that can assist you with accounting, invoicing, and receipts. If you don’t want to go with a full-on accounting system, a simple spreadsheet on Excel or Apache OpenOffice may be right for you. If you aren’t using a software that already assists you with inventory, a basic spreadsheet can assist you, so you always have what you need in stock.

6. Marketing

Marketing is essential in the salon business. If you aren’t putting yourself out there on social media and connecting with current and potential clients, you are losing clients and money. Make sure to at least have a Facebook business page and Instagram business page. These are key for staying in touch with your current clients and marketing yourself to new clientele. This is important for a business at any age, but especially important when you are just opening a salon suite! 7. Know Your Worth!

It is important that you don’t undercharge for your services at your brand-new, luxury salon suite. Just because you are opening a new business, doesn’t mean your services and time are any less valuable. First, make a list of all your expenses, and estimate your average costs per month. Second, make a list of your intended services. Consider average pricing in your area, your most popular services, how booked you plan to be, and the clientele you are looking to attract – then decide on pricing based on those and your expenses. You want to ensure you are receiving enough profits to make your new venture is worth your time and effort.

8. Choosing Products

Now that you’re the boss, you get to pick your favorite products and find the line that represents you and your salon studio. Instead of just going through your local professional beauty supply store, consider working directly with a sales representative for your trusted line – they will keep you updated about new products, specials, and educational opportunities. In order to work directly with the product brand or find a sales representative, check out the brand’s website – most will have a business support section that can connect you with representatives and provide you with professional signage.

9. Design Your Salon Suite
